A salt lamp is simply a chunk of mined salt that has been hollowed out to allow room for a light bulb or tiny candle. The light glows through the medium of the salt crystal, which can range in color from a dark salmon pink to a pale orange. Salt crystals for salt lamps are mined in Russia and central Europe as well as in the Himalayas. Salt lamps make attractive accent lights. Their main attraction, however, is that the heating of the salt causes the crystal to release negative ions (often called simply 'ions').
Negative ions have long been considered healthy; the sea air, mountain air and the air around swiftly running water is high in negative ions. Indoor air, re-circulated air, and air around electronic equipment is very low in negative ions. Many office workers who suffer health complaints around fluorescent lighting and computer monitors report considerably less fatigue and headaches if the concentration of negative ions in the air is increased. Why negative ions may be beneficial is only partially understood.
It has been shown that negative ions in the air bind with airborne pollutants, making them heavier so that they fall to the ground, and therefore are unavailable to be inhaled. Many modern air purifiers - the so-called 'ionic air cleaners' - use this technique to provide cleaner indoor air for allergy sufferers. Some studies seem to indicate that an increase in negative ions in the air increases bloodflow to the brain, which would have the effect of improved concentration. The salt lamp is an attractive alternative to the utilitarian look of an air purifier.
The amount of negative ions a salt lamp can release depends on its size and how warm the candle can make it. The larger the crystal, obviously, the more expensive the lamp, but the larger area it can provide with negative ions. Salt lamps that produce 'night-light' amounts of light can provide ions to an area equal to the average office cubicle front room or bedroom.

It is true, there are Seven Vampire Virtues and if anyone knows about them it is Robert M. Place, artist and author of The Vampire Tarot, published by St Martin’s Press in 2009. Place based his tarot on the legends and iconographic figures of Brahm Stoker’s Dracula . With the Vampire Virtue Candles, Place has taken the lessons of the Dracula characters and translated them into virtues we can use in our 21st century world. Spring has brought a dozens of NEW items here to the CANDLE WICK SHOP but none have made us more excited than our THREE new lines of greeting cards!

We started off with HARD CARDS. Based out of Los Angeles, the makers of Hard Cards couldn’t lie to their friends any longer. They were tired of pretending that they were happy about new babies, thrilled that friends were turning another year older, that they cared about their problems or that that things were always so darn serious. These greeting cards make you laugh at the truth. That is, they’re snarky, funny, irreverent messages which are by contrast beautifully designed. Hard Cards have been created to have minimal environmental impact. Every Hard Card and envelope are printed with soy ink and made from 100% Post Consumer Waste. That means no trees were cut down to make these babies and no bleach, acid, or chlorine was used in manufacturing. We dare you to read these and not laugh out loud!

Then we stumbled upon cards from OPLUSD (Offensive + Delightful) also out of Los Angeles. After seeing one card, we were rolling on the floor and couldn’t put them down…they’re about as addictive as M&M’s! They are a bit profane but in the nicest way! Their use of captivating retro-pictures along with eye-popping graphics leaves you unsuspecting of the message that really packs a wallop! Each card comes with a Warning: OPLUSD cards are intended for only close friends, family members, lovers, neighbors, interesting strangers, the intelligentsia, those with a highly developed sense of sarcasm, and of course, those of us who really get a kick out of life! Life is short…laughing it up!

And last but not nearly least we found the most charming and adorable cards from Hello! Lucky (these are ones that you can send to grandma) This line of darling cards celebrate every monumental step in our lives from Birthdays, Babies and Get Well Wishes to Love and Sorrow. Hello! Lucky cards are designed the gentlest and most adorable graphics and sketches which will leave nothing but a smile on your face. They’re sweetly crafted on 30% post –consumer waste recycled paper but is now transitioning the line to 100% recycled paper produced from a paper mill powered by green energy.

We couldn’t be more pleased with our irreverent, offensive yet delightful and simply charming greeting cards and we’re certainly you’ll share in our exuberance!
