Marketing in the 21st century

Social and viral are the current buzz words in the marketing community along with words like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Yelp!, 4square,ning, Linked-In. This is decade of being global and local at the same time and to top it all off, everything has sped up! Once you finally get the hang of one new tool, 4 more pop up and are they even worth the effort and time it takes to integrate them.

All roads are leading back to Facebook.. As you tool around the internet it seems that every article, video, and even product give you an option to share your new find with all of your friends on Facebook. Every other social networking links back to Facebook, I have seen Schools, all levels of government, stores, and doctors are all linking back there too! Actually 65% of all adults with computers have a Facebook account (who is this remaining 35% and why are they holding out?) According to Facebook, of all the 400 million active users, 50% visit every day and have an average of 130 friends. (BTW, 500 billion minutes are spent on Facebook every week)

I look like an ad for Facebook, dont I? What I am painting a picture of is how many people are on Facebook alone and how each one of them has a small community that they talk to. Each time a post if shared or commented on, another 130 people are exposed to it. Its a cascade effect at the very least. If you get a post, article or inspirational statement shared out, once a week, you have a potential of reaching millions.

All Roads may lead to Facebook, but we watch YouTube when we get there. From one seminar I went to, the presenter said that 85% of all adults with computers visit you tube at least one time a week for instructional videos. More and more companies are filling their FAQ sections with videos. Even Coventry is getting into the act. Mid May I posted a video blog on Youtube and then linked to Facebook and that got more hits in 2 weeks than my FAQ page would get in a year.

YouTube is the fastest growing site of all time! According to YouTube, People are watching 2 billion videos a day..and uploading hundreds of thousands of videos daily. In fact, every minute, 24 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube.

How can you cash in on that traffic? Start with Facebook and expand from there. If you want friends comment on posts as well as be creative and crafty in your own. PLEASE, dont tell everyone about the minutia details of your day talk about big wins, special occasions, humorous or inspirational statements and things that you would tell a customer. Post pictures of you, your store and your products in use. Invite people to your events, and why not send out Happy Birthday coupons!

This is only the beginning and there are TONS of articles, books and seminars on how to use Social Media tools for marketing. Google it!
